Reformer Pilates for Men: Strength & Mobility in Tufnell Park

- , General
I have to admit that when I was 27, I dismissed Yoga and Pilates as activities ‘for women.’ Fast forward nearly 20 years, and I now see Reformer Pilates as an indispensable component of a high-performance training program for men. At our Tufnell Park studio, I see more and more men from Highgate and Kentish Town moving past these stereotypes to find the missing link in their fitness routine. But why do men need reformer pilates?
Without a doubt there are still men that think the way I used to at the age of 27. Yet times have changed and I am now having men clients that love practicing reformer pilates as much as they do gym sessions. If you are currently on the fence let me share with you the 3 reasons that make men love reformer pilates.
Static stretching is boring
It is no secret that men tend to be stiffer than women, and for a stiff person, traditional static stretching is incredibly boring. However, Reformer Pilates offers ‘stretching with resistance.’ For our clients who cycle in Hampstead Heath or play tennis in Dartmouth Park, this approach targets the neglected ‘supportive’ muscles. This doesn’t just reduce injury risk; it directly enhances performance in sports like skiing, tennis, and cycling.
Individuals that are used to weight training relate easier to stretching with resistance. A lot of men love the idea of pushing or pulling while stretching their cement-like muscles.
The important muscles are not always big
The focus in most gym programs is on the big muscles: chest, legs, glutes, back. The reality is that big muscles depend on smaller muscles in order to function optimally (ie. Rotator cuff stabilise the Deltoids). Small, supportive muscles are often overlooked in gym workouts but weakness or imbalance in them can predispose us to injuries.
You probably have heard that:
“An Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure.”
Soon after men start practicing Reformer Pilates understand that the muscles they have been overlooking deserve more attention and by doing so not only they will reduce the risk of injuries but they can also enhance their performance in their favourite sport (ski, tennis, basketball, etc.).
Who wants fat around his waist?
Men are biologically prone to the ‘apple-shape’ figure, largely due to the effect cortisol has on fat storage around the midsection. For the high-pressure professional working in the City or Camden, stress-induced weight gain is a common frustration. While the gym is great for bulk, the Reformer offers a unique way to target the deep core and ‘slim down’ the waistline by focusing on internal integrity.
The Occupational Hazard of North London Professionals
Many of the men we see in Tufnell Park and Highgate spend their weeks hunched over laptops or in long meetings. This leads to ‘short’ hip flexors and ’rounded’ shoulders. Our 1:1 sessions are designed to reverse this ‘desk-posture,’ restoring the structural balance needed to stay competitive both in the boardroom and in your weekend athletic pursuits.
Take home message
Stereotypes are fading because men want results. In my experience at the studio, it only takes one or two sessions for a man to see the value of Reformer Pilates. Whether it’s stretching with resistance, improving your golf swing, or strengthening your midsection, the results speak for themselves. If you’re ready to see what’s missing in your training, join us in Tufnell Park.
